Preparing Juice
Decide what information matters. Then see what happens when the question changes.
A group is preparing juice for an afternoon activity.
The Situation
There are 24 people registered for the activity.
Two will be absent.
The juice will be served in cups that can hold
250 mL.
Each person who attends will receive
180 mL of juice.
There are 5 pitchers available.
Each pitcher can hold 1.5 liters.
Question 1
How much juice is needed for the people who will attend?
For each piece of information, decide whether you need it to answer this question.
mL
Question 2
Are the 5 pitchers enough to hold all the juice?
Look at the same information again. Has anything changed about what matters?
mL
What Changed?
The question changed, so the information that mattered changed too.
Question 1
The number of people attending and the amount of juice each person receives determine how much juice is needed.
Question 2
The number of pitchers and the capacity of each pitcher now matter because the question is whether the juice will fit.
Why was the cup capacity still not needed for Question 2?
The cup capacity does not affect how much juice is needed or whether the pitchers can hold it. It would matter if the question were about serving the juice—for example, how many cups are needed.
